Frequently Asked Questions
What is the rule of 7 in orthodontics?
In orthodontics, the “Rule of 7” is a guideline that recommends children receive their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. At this age, a child has a mix of baby and permanent teeth, making it an ideal time to spot developing bite issues, jaw discrepancies, and crowding.
Can you go straight to an orthodontist?
Yes, you can absolutely go straight to an orthodontist. You do not need a referral from a general dentist. Many orthodontic offices accept direct appointments and offer complimentary initial consultations to discuss treatment options like braces or Invisalign.
What usually happens at your first orthodontist appointment?
During this time, we’ll get to know you, your goals, your concerns, and what you’d love to change about your smile. We’ll also review your dental and medical history so we have a complete picture before making any recommendations. Your first orthodontic appointment is about you, not rushing you into treatment.
Can my orthodontist refuse to take my braces off?
Yes, your orthodontist can legally and professionally refuse to remove your braces, but it depends on the reason. If you are an adult, you generally have the final say over your medical care, but doctors can decline to end treatment early if it compromises your health.
Can an orthodontist pull out a tooth?
While many orthodontists are quick to extract, many orthodontists avoid extraction at all costs. Both extremes are a dis-service to the patient. In fact, tailored treatment is the proper approach.
